One message that I cannot get away from is that it is okay to give yourself permission to heal—it is NECESSARY. So many will tell you this concept is selfish, thoughtless or egotistical. Actually it is thoughtless and selfish for you not put yourself first, except for when it comes to god, and egotistical for anyone to demand the opposite of you. Why?
The Airline Oxygen Mask Exercise is the perfect example and I share it often. During their safety instructions, the attendant will tell passengers their first priority is to put on their own oxygen mask before attempting to help other passengers including their children. Why? Putting on your mask first decreases the risk of you passing out before having the opportunity to help anyone.
Moral of the story: if you cannot breathe, are drowning, suffocating or depleting your strength, attempting to save someone else first will only result in everyone dying or you causing greater harm than good. So, unless you are making the ultimate sacrifice and exchanging your life so someone else can live, make sure you continually renew your mind, body and spirit. You must remain uplifted and fully charged so that you have something to give instead of running on empty and causing more harm than good.
