The Imitation Game’s screenwriter Graham Moore’s Oscar speech:
“So in this brief time here, what I wanted to do was say this: When I was 16 years old, I tried to kill myself because I felt weird and I felt different, and I felt like I did not belong . . . and now I’m standing here, and so I would like this moment to be for this kid out there who feels like she’s weird or she’s different or she doesn’t fit in anywhere. Yes, you do. I promise you do. Stay weird, stay different and then, when it’s your turn, and you are standing on this stage, please pass the same message to the next person who comes along.”
These words made my spirit glad but they are the testament of my life. Some of us, more than others, were born with unique things that made us stand out and be picked on. Society’s views are fleeting and constantly changing; if you base your self-worth and self-esteem on them alone, you are doomed for failure. Add to that life’s traumas, drama and failures, and depression, sadness and sometimes thoughts of suicide are inevitable.
I am a firm believer and a witness that, although God may not create your pain or setback, God will use even the darkest moments of your life to bring Him glory. I remember my dark days of childhood abuse and the constant pain that led me to contemplate suicide on many occasions. During those moments I could never imagine my pain and what happened to me ever having a purpose or being used in any way, shape or form for any good purpose. Today, I am a living witness, that not only will God get the glory from your pain, defeats and traumas but He will also use them to propel you into greatness.
The world needs the authenticity and solution/breath of life that can only come from the pit of your despair, defeat and pain. Indeed, stay weird, stay alive and fight for another day; you are worth it and the world is counting on you!
